The Leader is a one-act play by Eugene Ionesco from 1953. We perform the play in Polish with English subtitles.
The theme: our love and hunger for solid leadership, the need for a domineering figure, a God-like driving force, the great everlasting hope and a dependable moral compass, immaculately dressed in an elegant suit or a flashy uniform. The story entails three characters - The Speaker, a dominant figure, The Girl, a masculine woman and The Boy, a feminine man - who are eagerly waiting for the arrival of their Leader. The beloved Leader is scheduled to give a historic speech on the main square. While waiting, all sorts of things start to happen to our characters: love and hate, hope and despair, fun and work, crime and punishment...in essence, life occurs... and the tension is rising with every minute – will the Leader arrive in time? Will we see him, touch him, maybe even get an autograph?
There are 4 actors, 3 songs and 2 technicians in this short play, but as Connor MacCloud said : There can be only one...
